Relational Integrity™

A framework for understanding and strengthening the foundational skills that make healthy relationships possible.

We spend time developing our physical fitness, intellectual abilities, and professional skills, yet very few of us are ever directly taught how to develop the capacities that support healthy relationships.

Relational Integrity™ is a framework for understanding and strengthening those capacities.

Rather than focusing on personality traits or deficits, this framework helps us focus on the underlying skills that allow people to become knowable to themselves and others, relate authentically and responsibly, navigate tension in their lives, communicate honestly, and grow through relationship.

And just like physical fitness, relational fitness is something that we can intentionally cultivate through practice.

LEARNING TO RELATE

The Framework

Simply put, Relational Integrity is a map for understanding what makes healthy relationships possible. We can easily recognize the qualities of relational health—like awareness, authenticity, and attunement—but we often have a hard time identifying what specifically gives rise to them.

One way to think about Relational Integrity is how we navigate our inner and outer worlds.

Like any explorer, we first need a stable center of gravity—an inner anchor that allows our experiences to remain connected to a coherent sense of self. From there, we can begin exploring the landscape within.

As we navigate that inner landscape, our personal values function like a compass, helping us decide where to go and why. Our relational skills become the navigation tools we use to stay present with ourselves while in contact with reality.

This matters because the skills we use to navigate our inner world are the very same skills we use to navigate our outer world—our relationships with others. As our relationship with ourselves becomes more integrated, so too does our capacity to engage more fully and authentically with the people around us.

When thought about this way, Relational Integrity is a dynamic inner architecture that is continually evolving, being shaped by the way we respond to our experiences. By strengthening that architecture, we strengthen our capacity to deeply meet ourselves, others, and the world.

practicing relational integrity

Relational Integrity, like physical fitness, develops through practice. It cannot be developed through reflection or insight alone.

That is why it is essential to create intentional environments where people can practice relating in real time. An intentional practice environment gives us a chance to notice and experiment with new ways of relating before bringing them back into everyday life.

Since our everyday relationships reflect both our strengths and our blind spots, they can reinforce familiar—and sometimes counterproductive—ways of relating. Through practicing Relational Integrity, we can refine our navigation tools. These include:

  • Containment - I deserve to exist.

  • Capacity - I can take up space.

  • Embodiment - I can inhabit contact with reality.

  • Relationality - I can inhabit contact with others and others’ contact with me.

  • Resonance - Experience can shape me.

  • Endurance - I can maintain connection across time and contexts.

Whether we are thriving in our current relationships or seeking more meaningful connections, we can all benefit from expanding our relational navigation tools.

THE JOURNEY AHEAD

Relational Integrity is an evolving framework. As The Self Revolution grows, so too will our understanding of how these capacities develop, how they can be strengthened, and what this framework looks like in practice. Through continued research and curriculum development, we hope to deepen our understanding of what helps people build the inner architecture that sustains healthy relationships.
